After making his name as one of the many lead singers of Deep Purple, David Coverdale formed Whitesnake in 1978. With a thunderous rhythm section and Coverdale's soaring vocals, the band slowly built its reputation on the hard rock scene. But it wasn't until adopting more of a hair metal approach in the mid ‘80s that they broke through in a big way in the U.S. and became a worldwide sensation.
