Soul vocalist Ann Alford made just one single, "Got to Get Me a Job"/"If It Ain't One Thing (It's Another)," which came out on the Shreveport, LA, Hy-Sign label in 1972. The top side was a funk tune that was unabashedly derivative of Sly Stone's "Thank You," with the same kind of bubbly guitar-bass interplay and, more reprehensibly, slowly swelling horn lines that couldn't help but recall that Sly single. The superior flip side was an anguished ballad that echoed James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World." Both songs were reissued on the Kent compilation Shreveport Southern Soul: The Murco Story. ~ Richie Unterberger
