The Supersonic Storybook
Album - Alternative, Music, Rock, Rock & Roll, Hard Rock, Adult Alternative
A gloriously inebriated hybrid of Sonic Youth and Grand Funk Railroad, Urge Overkill’s 1991 album The Supersonic Storybook melds the scraggly attitude of indie rock to the funky good-time rock ‘n’ roll of the early '70s. “Theme from Navajo” elucidates the band’s debts to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, while a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Emmaline” heralds an affinity for funk and disco rarely seen in the alterative rock world. The rest of the songs split the difference between those two planes, proving that it’s possible to be loud and slovenly and still sweet-talk listeners onto the dance floor.
