Album Reviews

Though their full-length debut, Headstates, still stands as one of techno's top production LPs (even without the inclusion of the excellent "Positive Education" single from one year earlier), Slam's Orde Meikle and Stuart McMillan spent most of their professional time as DJs. And more than five years after any new material other than remixes, Meikle and McMillan released their first major mix album, Past Lessons/Future Theories. The duo eases listeners in with understated tracks from Elbee Bad and Chris Brann's Wambonix project, then looks back into techno's past, grabbing productions from Chicago and Detroit producers like Kevin Saunderson (as E-Dancer), Ron Trent, Lil Louis, and Stacey Pullen, as well as a Bushwacka! remix of the classic "Sueño Latino." The second disc also works in tech-house territory, with nu skool producers like Trevor Rockliffe, Samuel L. Session, Bushwacka!, Gaetano Parisio, and Umek. It's a relentlessly smooth mix, heavy on the beats but full of textures for all the at-home listeners. Sure, it's not Headstates, Pt. 2, but for punters ready to relive a classic night or those curious about a Slam gig, Past Lessons/Future Theories is a perfect musical education. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

My Delirium My Delirium
LadyHawke
Pip Brown a.k.a. Ladyhawke is a Kiwi born, Aussie based and, thanks to her timely 80's revivalism, Shoreditch adopted singer who started a solo career after many indie ventures, launched through the always trendy Modular stable. Her album, one of the most accomplished debuts of the year, distils big love for synth-pop in each and every cut and has earned her widespread critical acclaim. It was previewed by a couple of trendy bar favourites, "Paris is burning" and "From dusk til dawn" and offers many other excellent moments to discover. Third single "My Delirium" is a little pop-rock gem, nicely revisiting new wave era style. It could have been taken off one of Kim Wilde's early albums and hopefully will be the one that wins over the general public.
