IZ is Israel Kamakawiwo’ole's artistic nickname. He's the man responsible for the best selling Hawaiian album of all time. Prematurely dead in 1997 due to extreme obesity, his touchingly sweet, high-pitched voice, already used by Hollywood in the soundtracks of “Finding Forrester” and “Meet Joe Black”, was recently heard in one of ER’s episodes, which may have triggered a second wave of people discovering his talented renditions of standards like “Over The Rainbow” and “What a wonderful world”, backed by traditional ukulele arrangements. This could be a boom among Radio 2 listeners.
