Formed in Chicago in 1988 The Smashing Pumpkins have had something of a turbulent career trajectory. Despite being responsible for some classic albums such as 1993's 'Siamese Dream' and 1995's 'Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness', the bands history been plagued by internal rifts and drug problems (their keyboard player died of an overdose in 1996). They announced their split in 2000 but reformed with a new line-up in 2006 and the next year released their first new album in seven years, 'Zeitgeist'. 'Tarantula' was the first single and heralded a return to the band's earlier hard rock roots, particularly noticeable after the electronic experimentation of earlier albums like 'Adore'. Corgan is on fine form, blasting his way through the vocals and letting rip with some fret shredding guitar as drummer Jimmy Chamberlain keeps the beat firing with some frantic skin pounding. Unfortunately the band had not fully managed to put their problems behind them entirely and Chamberlain left in 2009, leaving Corgan to soldier on alone.
