Flight Of The Conchords are "New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy-folk duo;" but don’t let that put you off, the pair are responsible for some of the greatest pop and rock parodies since Spinal Tap.
The Conchords, AKA Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, first rose to prominence in a BBC radio series and most recently in the HBO sitcom where the group's musical send-ups of Bowie, Pet Shop Boys and Marvin Gaye have earned them cult status.
On "Hiphopopotamus vs. The Rhymenocerous", the band adopts respective 'street' alter-egos with fairly hilarious results. Featuring lines such as "They call me the Hiphopopotamus / My lyrics are bottomless ..." (cue long awkward pause) the track is a ridiculous combination of "mild mannered Kiwi Folk Singer" attempting Gangsta Rap.
If you're a fan of The Mighty Boosh and haven't experienced Flight of the Conchords be prepared to burn your Noel Feilding posters as FOTC show how musical comedy is really done.
