Similar to traditional compositions, songs in the public domain have no established author, usually because they date from the pre-publishing era when composers were unlikely to realize any profits from songs they'd written. Though songs in the public domain understandably range all over the map and are found in every country, the large majority come from the British folk traditions transplanted to America and often used in styles including popular song, country, and blues. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
