Peaches (Merrill Nisker) burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cock-sure rapping and spurting groovebox beats. Indeed, this vulgar Canadian temptress may have come from an underground womb of acoustic folk (Mermaid Café), avant jazz (Fancypants Hoodlum), and deconstructed noise swarms (the Shit), but it wasn't until 2000's new guise that her fearless, apolitical gender-play truly raised heads. European trawls unearthed new admirers, and collaborations with the equally lewd Chilly Gonzales certainly fueled the fire for her first solo effort. By the time she signed onto Berlin's Kitty-Yo label and unleashed The Teaches of Peaches, her niche had already been carved out. Peaches simultaneously sounded like a Penthouse Forum and Grandmaster Flash, Shirley Manson, and Charles Manson -- or just Justine Frischmann hitting her sexual peak. Beat Control Tilly And The Wall |
| "O",The third offering from Omaha's indie darlings, left a bitter taste in our mouths while passing completely unnoticed thanks to a lacklustre collection of rather dull tunes. Luckily for the tap-dancing five-piece, they kept an ace up their sleeves and it's about to become an unexpected hit as the Radio 1 has playlisted it. "Beat Control" was originally released as a very limited edition 7" single, in between albums, and it was not meant to be included in "O". Hailed as a shift towards dance-pop, with some discreet electronic touches, it showed a welcomed new direction for the band, away from their habitual folky-pop. Many would have preferred them following that path. Better late than never, if this track confirms its potential it could become the cornestone of Tilly & The wall's future. | |
