Album Reviews

Greatest Hits 1981-1995 is an adequate single-disc overview of Luther Vandross' biggest hits for Epic Records, but the double-disc The Best Of is a richer collection that makes a stronger case for his talent as a smooth soul vocalist and a songwriter. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Phoros E.P. Phoros E.P. Crimea X

Introducing the all new and highly elusive Crimea X with their latest EP 'Phoros' soon to be released, July 2009 in the UK on Hell Yeah Records. There are six tracks of unadulterated goodness, so if you like your punky/80's disco beats and lingering minimalist sounds then you have arrived at the correct destination. I would describe these boys as modern dance for the electro mash-up generation. Opener '10PM' is quite a chilled affair with building block beats and subtle layers gradually coming in, the EP also features two remixes of this track: the 'Florian Meindl Remix' and 'Enzo Elia & Martin Pantino Remix'; so plenty for the serious connoisseur of high class electro remixing to get excited about. The Meindl version especially branches out into new territory, giving the track an uplifting yet harder and jauntier edge; also the dualling keys work like an homage to the warped sound of electro banjos. Throughout the remaining tracks the story, and the EP as a whole, comes together to build a soundscape that is more than the sum of its parts. From the space odyssey-tinged 'December' to the altogether more intimidating 'October'. Each song is full of anticipation inducing beats and lyrical riffs, building a sense of place within each track. Altogether, it presents enough evidence to make us wait for greater things to come.~ Hazel Savage. Copyright (c) Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009. All rights reserved.
