Indie kids of the world unite! Gossip are up there among the standard bearers for modern indie as shown by their fondness for knocking out spiky pop songs, playing Glastonbury (2007 & 2008) and featuring in every edition of the NME. Formed in Olympia,Washington in 1999, Gossip released a couple of EPs and an album to some acclaim, but it was really 2003 'Movement' that laid the foundation for their current success. Their third studio album 'Standing in the Way of Control' charted at number 22 in the UK and featured the eponymous single, probably the band's best known song to date. A riposte to the USA's Federal Marriage Amendment, which aimed to ban same sex marriages, the song confirmed lead singer Beth Ditto's reputation for speaking her mind and being up front about her sexuality. 'Standing In The Way Of Control' shows that a three piece can still make more than enough noise, especially when fronted by someone as in your face as Ditto. ~Martin Gadgil.
