This is the title track and lead single from the album 'Abracadabra', which The Steve Miller Band released in 1982. It was the third number one hit for the band in the US and it performed well around the world. A killer hook based on an ascending scale pattern is backed up by chugging keys and a solid rhythm section. It's a particularly catchy tune, peppered with various guitar and percussion effects that still sounds fresh today. The Steve Miller Band formed in San Francisco in 1967 and have kept the tunes flowing ever since, although the list of former members is quite lengthy. After initially starting off in Chicago the band moved back to California, managed to get a deal with Capitol Records and signed up Boz Scaggs to help out on guitar. Despite the lack of early success the band plugged away, releasing 'Brave New World' in 1969 which featured the track 'My Dark Hour' which was co-written with and featured bass by one Paul Ramon, aka Paul McCartney. By the time 'Abracadabra' came out in the 80s, The Miller Band had a string of successful albums behind them. The single is a popular floor-filler at weddings and office parties, but don't let that put you off. ~Martin Gadgil. Copyright (c) Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009. All rights reserved |
