Reach

Album Reviews

For nearly two decades, not much was heard from one of the '80s top mainstream rock acts, Survivor. In the wake of 1988's Too Hot to Sleep, it seemed as if the band had fallen off the face of the earth. But with renewed interest in '80s rock circa the early 21st century, three Survivor veterans -- singer Jimi Jamison (not the "Eye of the Tiger" guy, he's the "Burning Heart" guy), guitarist Frankie Sullivan, and drummer Marc Droubay -- opted to resuscitate the band, with 2006's Reach. Unlike some other acts of the '80s who attempt to keep pace with the young pups by updating their sound (and oft-times floundering), Reach finds Survivor sticking with what they know best. And of course, that's melodic rockers with a clean production, as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening title track and "Fire Makes Steel." And of course, what would a Survivor album be without the obligatory sappy ballad? No need to worry, "Rhythm of Your Heart" is Survivor's latest entry in the power ballad canon. But without a new Rocky movie to provide an anthem for, Reach will appeal only to diehards. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Be On You Be On You
Flo Rida Feat. Ne-Yo

You may think taking a song title from one of the more memorable lines from Will Ferrell's 'Anchorman' is more likely to produce bouts of laughter than a platinum selling single; but if there's one thing Flo Rida knows how to do, it's how to turn an out-there song concept into gold . The Dead or Alive sampling 'Right Round' sold over 600,000 downloads in its first week of release and 'Sugar', which took its cues from the slightly jokey Euro-pop of Eiffel 65, was also a huge mega-selling hit. On this single, Flo Rida enlists the help of R&B sensation Ne-Yo to give us a less frantic affair than his previous work. As you might expect 'Be on You' is a straight up R&B love song, merging the rappers fast paced flow with the soft vocal croon of Ne-Yo. It's a combination that quickly saw the track snapped up by both Ne-Yo's and Flo Rida's equally devoted following and allowed the record to quickly break into the top 20 of the US Billboard chart on release.~Jon Davies (C) Shazam Entertainment 2009.
