One of today's biggest musical institutions, Mariah Carey is one of the highest grossing female vocalists of all time. She has had an astounding number of hits spanning 20 years, and is an outstanding songwriter. After her huge comeback album 'The Emancipation Of Mimi', Mariah continued her dream run with single 'Touch My Body'. A sensual mid-tempo romp, the song became a worldwide smash and is possibly most memorable for its rather funny video clip, in which Mariah cavorts around with a 'Compu-nerd', laser guns and a unicorn. Mariah doesn't seem to be taking herself too seriously and the 'funny' formula certainly worked for her. 'Touch My Body' became Carey's eighteenth US #1 and also reached the upper echelons of charts around the world. The song has a relatively simple structure and texture, but this is definitely a large part of its appeal. Mariah manages to utilise her renowned vocals to full effect without going overboard, as she debatably has in the past. 'Touch My Body' may not go down in history as Mariah's signature tune -that title surely goes to 'We Belong Together'-, but it is an enjoyable enough way to spend three and a half minutes. ~John Rowley.
