2009 X Factor finalist Murs may have not been able to beat eventual winner Joe McElderry in the competition, but he at least won the race to release the first non X Factor solo single. 'Please Don't Let Me Go' was Murs' first solo outing since leaving the competition and consequently had a lot riding on it. During the X Factor he sang in a range of styles but tended towards the old school end of the spectrum with The Isley Brothers, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Tina Turner all appearing among his song choices. Clearly not wanting to take too many risks with his début release he avoids taking that route, surprising many who thought the Amy Winehouse/Plan B approach would have worked for him. 'Please Don't Let Me Go' however takes the safe option working an off-beat reggae style lilt into a straight-forward pop chorus. Vocal-wise Murs is on the money as one would expect, and although he doesn't really get the chance to show off, he gives a solid performance that should keep his fans happy. ~Martin Gadgil.
