One of rock's survival stories, Simple Minds have been around in one form or another since the heady days of punk, laying claim to the UK number one album slot no less than five times. Originally formed in Glasgow in 1977 as the wonderfully titled Johnny and the Self-Abusers, they have had the ability to change their sound with the times, a chameleon-like strategy that has paid big dividends. After their early new wave days, the eighties saw them as paid up members of the New Romantic brigade, effortlessly knocking out hits such as 'Glittering Prize' and 'Promised You A Miracle'. Later on their music tended to lean towards anthemic stadium fillers like 'Don't You (Forget About Me), with its power drums and crowd pleasing sing-along chorus. Featuring on the soundtrack of the teen angst classic 'The Breakfast Club' no doubt helped propel the song to popularity and it went to number one in the USA. ~Martin Gadgil.
