Amerie's R'n'B hit '1 Thing' opens with a cowbell and go-go drums, which were a staple in popular music for a couple of years (see PCD) The listener never quite learns exactly what the 1 Thing that has Amerie tripping is, but that hardly matters. The song manages to stick to its R'n'B base whilst still taking some funk and soul influences, which adds to its catchiness. '1 Thing' drew Amerie a number of immediate comparisons with Beyoncé, so those who are fans of the 'Single Ladies' hit maker should be sure to check out this song. Amerie has failed to sustain an international music career, but '1 Thing' is still a gem of a song that will get most people dancing, and was a considerable hit across the UK and US. ~John Rowley.
