The former X Factor winner flips into party mode with her fifth release, the carnival inspired 'Start Without You'. RedOne (Lady Gaga, Kylie) gets the nod for the producers chair, and to his credit avoids the trap of making Burke sound like a second hand Gaga. Kicking off with some suitably Jamaican sounding chatter and the obligatory shout out to the producer, the track soon settles down with a thumping percussion backing and Alexandra proclaiming 'I'm like a beast', a terrific opening line by anyone's standards. After a few more pro-dancefloor exhortations and some dexterous production touches the chorus moves into view like a rum-soaked pirate ship and the Caribbean party atmosphere shifts into overdrive. The lilting calypso style melody, steel drum section and backing vocals have got 'summer' written all over them, and the toasting in the middle eight backed up with a haywire synth line only sweeten the deal. A slight departure from her earlier singles, (50% of which got to number one), 'Start Without You' shows that a little West Indian influence goes a long way.
