Real Life

Simple Minds

Best known for their 1985 number one hit "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from the film The Breakfast Club, Scotland's Simple Minds evolved from a post-punk art rock band influenced by Roxy Music into a grand, epic-sounding pop band along the lines of U2. Their first big successes were 1982's New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) and 1984's Sparkle in the Rain. After the success of "Don't You (Forget About Me)," Simple Minds' subsequent album, Once Upon a Time, was criticized for its bombastic approach. Its follow-up, the uncompromisingly political Street Fighting Years, squandered the band's commercial momentum. The group returned to personal themes and anthemic rock on 1991's Real Life. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
