Shazam's Review

Originally a hit for Tears For Fears in 1982, 'Mad World' was covered by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews for the soundtrack of the cult hit film 'Donnie Darko', which features a confused Jake Gyllenhaal talking to an evil-looking giant rabbit before a plane crashes into his house. Given the somewhat bizarre nature of the film, the choice of song is quite apt, as the lyrics touch on some morbid and slightly disturbing subjects ('...I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, that the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had' etc). This version is quite different from the original, with Andrews stripping all the guitars and percussion away to leave a bare bones arrangement with solo piano, some mournful strings and Jules' voice, augmented by a haunting vocoder in the chorus. It's a very simple treatment, but also a very effective one and obviously struck a chord with the public as it nabbed the lucrative Christmas number one slot in 2003 as well as featuring in a number of advertisements and television programmes. ~Martin Gadgil.
