Blur

Shazam's Review

Blur vs. Oasis; it's a rivalry that is still bound to get music fans of a certain age all fired up from beneath the hood of their wilting anoraks. It was the established rivalry of the mid-90s that celebrated sales figures rather than the quality of the actual music. This clash between musical titans brought about the death of true indie music and pioneered the new era of Britpop. But what is it that constitutes a winner in such a petty competition? For some, the victory lies with Oasis; who continue to produce new music which charts reasonably well, albeit by employing the same old tactic of embarking upon a war of words around the release of a new album. But for others, this writer included, it was simply the intellect behind the music of Blur which placed them head-and-shoulders above the nonsensical yammering of the Gallagher brothers. While Oasis stuck rigidly to their tried-and-tested formula, Blur constantly innovated and honed their craft. No better example of this can be seen than in 'Song 2'. Produced by the legendary Stephen Street, 'Song 2' is testament to the magnificent musicianship of each of the individual members of Blur. From its immediately recognisable stomp-along drum intro, courtesy of Dave Rowntree, to the inimitable guitar of Graham Coxon. Add to this is a chorus that was designed to be bellowed at the top of your voice at a festival/in the car/from the rooftops, and you have a true anthem. Essentially, 'Song 2' is pop music melted down and screwed up into something altogether more interesting. It is symbolic of the talent and sheer genius of Damon Albarn that the song remains mandatory listening for any lover of alternative music. ~Colette Hughes (c) Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009.
