Neon Trees earned their spurs opening for The Killers on their 2008 US tour and comparisons will inevitably be drawn between the two bands. However while Brandon Flowers et al are in their element with bombastic choruses and lashings of synthesiser, Neon Trees prefer a more pared down approach. In fact their début single 'Animal' probably owes more to The Strokes than to their erstwhile touring partners. Although they have released material on independent labels, their first album on a major, 'Habits', saw them introduced to a much larger audience, and this single gets things off to a bright start. Rattling along at a rate of knots, lead singer Tyler Glenn shows he's got what it takes as he puts in an energetic performance over a punchy backing track anchored by a solid bass and drum combo. The result is a lean, no-nonsense, professional sounding indie pop song.
