Back To The Plan

Rachel Portman

A British born (December 11, 1960 in Haslemere) composer, Rachel Portman's biggest claim to fame was being the first woman to win an Academy Award (an Oscar, that is) for Best Original Score. The award, which came about due to her work for the film Emma in 1996, wasn't her only chance at the coveted prize, as she continued her streak of well-respected and well-received works by earning nominations in 1999 and 2000 for Cider House Rules and Chocolat, respectively. Her first score, for the film War of the Buttons, appeared in 1994, and since then, Portman worked on and composed scores for more than 20 films, including the aforementioned box office hits, as well as Home Fries, Hart's War, and the remake of the Manchurian Candidate. She also composed the score for the 2008 film The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley. ~ Chris True, Rovi
