Shazam's Review
Taken from the 2007 album 'Covers', a collection of B-side covers the band had previously recorded, 'Running Up That Hill' became something of a sleeper hit for Placebo. While not immediately picked up by the listening public, an appearance on the US TV show 'THE O.C.' brought it national attention, bolstered by additional airings on 'Bones' and 'CSI'. Many thought the song a somewhat brave choice by the band as trying to better a track originally produced by Kate Bush could leave one open to uncomplimentary comparisons. However Placebo took a downbeat approach, replacing the strident rhythms of the original with muted heartbeat percussion and keeping the bombastic elements firmly in check; creating an introspective mood that focused more on the lyrics than the instrumentation. The gender swapping theme of the song fitted in well with Placebo's image as did the intensity of their reworking, leading to it becoming an underground hit.
