Shazam's Review

Being the vocalist in System of a Down, Serj Tankian has always been an influential voice in political rock music. Despite their announcement of a hiatus in 2006, System of the Down will always be viewed as one of the most powerful rock bands in history. Launching a solo career is a courageous move from Tankian, as his every move will be thoroughly watched by music critics across the world. Empty Walls was Tankian's first single release from his solo album in 2007. It's an angry anti-war stance, obvious through the song's lyrics: "Don't you see the bodies burning, desolate and full of learning?" Although this enraged message may come across as well worn to some listeners, it makes up for this through the songs construction. Dramatic piano harmonies, played by Tankian himself, mix in beautifully with the thrashing guitar riffs and dramatic beat, all of which go perfectly with the somewhat demented vocals. In ways it does sound similar to some of the System of a Down's material, yet to some degree more mainstream, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a very catchy song, and although some may criticise, it looks like Serj Tankian has a long-living successful career ahead of him. ~Carly Page. Copyright (c) Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009.
