With the power of music on radio and TV being ever diluted by digital platforms, the rise of synch's in advertising/films /TV are becoming an ever more useful tool in breaking new music. This is especially so in the US where conservative playlists stop more cutting edge artists gaining any kind of mainstream exposure. The latest artist to benefit from this is UK rapper M.I.A. whose "Paper Planes" track has been used in the campaign for the highly anticipated Judd Apatow produced stoner comedy Pineapple Express, this sees the record rocket to number 5 in the Billboard chart. Typical of M.I.A., "Paper Planes" mashes disparate influences (the hook from The Clash's "Straight To Hell" and West Coast Hip Hop style gunshot sample and ringing cash tills) and aided by Diplo's production creates a piece of work that has found favour with tastemakers the world over. Now due for a UK re-release, let's hope "Paper Planes" can gain some much deserved success on home soil after her surprise rise up the charts across the pond.  shazam
