The universally-liked, reformed, four-piece band continue their current success (still without Robbie) with a second single from their number one album 'The Circus'. The previous album, their "comeback", was the first time all four members sang a lead vocal on at least one of the tracks, obviously a strategy meant to take the band in a new direction and give a new feel to their recordings. Mark Owen carries this tradition on by being front man on 'Up All Night', which at first listen, aims to emulate the sound and success of their previous single 'Shine', but unfortunately falls somewhat short. The jangling melody is criss-crossed by annoying brass band sounds and a woeful finger clicking routine at the beginning of the track, but the tune improves and builds almost crescendo-like towards the end of the track to redeem itself. It has a Beatle-esque/ELO quality, but sounds dated and is so unlike stuff they have done before you almost cannot believe it's them. Mark doesn't do a bad job on the singing side - his voice is warm & has a great tone. The other pluses are that the chorus is unavoidably catchy and comes across well on the radio, but you can't help feeling that when compared to recent Take That classics like 'Patience' and the amazing 'Rule The World', it pales. The fans will probably love it and it also will undoubtably be an theatrical event when played live on their upcoming tour (the fastest selling in UK history). Having said all that, there's still loads to come from Take That, which should see them add to their tally of 11 UK number one singles and great reputation. ~Stuart Ayling~.
