Shazam's Review

2009 has begun with a rare consensus among critics, hailing “Merriweather Post Pavillion” as the contender to beat for best album of the year. And rightly so, because the eighth album in the career of Baltimore's finest avant-garde act sees the band reaching a fine balance between their experimental nature and the rules of conventional songwriting, which gets them ready to move to their next level and appeal to wider audiences. With Deakin, their guitar player, on temporary leave the other three core members decided to write the new album with no guitars at all, using the sampler as their principal instrument, and adding for the first time house music to their sonic palette. The result contains highlights such as “My Girls,” an exhilarating and life-affirming combination of Panda Bear’s summery psychedelic loops with house beats in Beach Boys meets Frankie Knuckles vein –there is even a mash-up between the song and Knuckles’ classic “Your Love” circulating on the net- that could well become their first hit single. ~Roberto González~Copyright © Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009.
