Every band would ideally like to have a unique selling point that can raise them above the competition. Apocalyptica have nailed it - not only are they a classically trained, Finnish heavy metal act, they have eschewed the prime symbol of heavy rock, the guitar, for cellos. Add the fact that they can make those cellos sound like Metallica and you have a winning combination. The band have shifted over three million albums with a combination of cover versions (Pantera, Sepultura) and original compositions, and have played with a number of guest vocalists including Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and Till Lindemann (Rammstein). On 'I Don't Care', the third single from their 2007 album 'Worlds Collide' they team up with Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace. Starting with some classical cello elegance the track soon ramps up the volume and crashes into hard rock territory. Gontier puts in an impressive shift as a combination of piano, strings and downright heaviness bounces around him, a mix that took the single to the top of the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart. ~Martin Gadgil.
