Shazam's Review

Cheryl Cole, formerly Cheryl Tweedy, is one fifth of the hugely successful girl group 'Girls Aloud' and with this debut single, a solo artist in her own right. Taken from the 2009 album '3 Words', Cole shot to fame after being discovered on reality television show 'Popstars: The Rivals' . Along with her fellow band mates, Cheryl Cole became one of the most successful performers to spring from reality TV; scoring a slew of platinum selling singles and albums. In 2008 Cole continued her fame trajectory by becoming a judge on the UK version of the The X Factor. On 'Fight For This Love' she returns to her day job - albeit without the help of the other members of Girls Aloud. The single is a smooth R&B number, with lyrics allegedly influenced by her husband's own marital indiscretions. While it's unclear if Cheryl will favour a solo career without Girls Aloud, the success of this single shows she won't be short of options. ~Jon Davies. After her first stint on TV talent contest ‘The X Factor’ and appearing in every gossip magazine when she found out that husband Ashley Cole was cheating on her, Cheryl must have noticed that she was the best known member of pop group Girls Aloud. Therefore she has decided to make the most of this extra boost of fame by launching a solo career. ‘Fight For This Love’ is nowhere near as intelligent or catchy as a typical Girls Aloud single, nor has Cole’s voice ever been the greatest of the girl band’s, but this auto tuned slice of disposable electro pop fills the supposed gap in the market quite nicely. With its clever use of ‘oh’s and ‘no’s to help the lines rhyme with each other, the lyrics are a thing of mindless, overused brilliance - "driving fast but let’s go slow / what I don’t wanna do is crash, no" could easily be quoted in a driving lesson, while the time filling technique of repeating words - ‘we gotta fight fight fight fight fight for this love’ makes sure the song fits the ‘over three minutes’ brief from the record label. As much as we all like Cheryl, arguably this song may not the best possible start to a solo career. Luckily its catchy chorus will still keep people buying the single and album, so the high hopes for Mrs. Cole solo project remain there. ~Charlotte Earney.
