Shazam's Review

'Empire State of Mind' is taken from Jay-Z's eleventh studio album, 'The Blueprint 3': a record that helped Jay-Z equal Elvis' record as the artist with the second most US number 1 albums behind The Beatles. The third single after the controversial 'Death of Autotune' and the star-studded 'Run This Town', 'Empire State Of Mind' is an evocative tribute to Jay-Z's hometown New York: the places, icons, and moments that shaped his rise from the hood to the very embodiment of the American dream. As a composition 'Empire State Of Mind' reflects the Big Apple's musical diversity through the fusion of two of its most representative genres: the hip-hop culture Jay-Z belongs to and the Broadway musicals of his home town. With a celebratory chorus sang by soul songstress and fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys, the record is nicely underpinned by a piano sample taken from the soul oldie 'Love On A Two Way Street' by The Moments. ~Roberto González~ Copyright (c) Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009.  shazam
Arguably the weakest of the trilogy, yet Jay-Z's 'The Blueprint 3' is reaching far beyond the ambitions of his creator. In the States, it is already one of the fastest selling records of the year, becoming his 10th chart-topper and making him tying with Elvis as the second artist with more Number One albums in the Billboard charts, only behind The Beatles. In the UK the Glastonbury effect seems to have paid-off, finally giving the star the status he enjoys everywhere else. The third single after the controversial 'Death of Autotune' and the star-studded 'Run this town' is an evocative tribute to his hometown New York; the places, icons, and moments that shaped his rise from the hood to the very embodiment of the American dream, in such bombastic way that now he feels free to declare himself the New Sinatra. Musically it reflects the big apple's musical diversity through the fusion of two of its most representative genres: the hip-hop culture he belongs to and the Broadway musicals, with a celebratory chorus sang by soul songstress and fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys; all nicely underpinned by a piano sampler taken from the soul oldie 'Love on a two way street' by The Moments. ~Roberto González~ Copyright © Shazam Entertainment Limited 2009.
