After departing from the spotlight in the early 2000s, New Orleans bounce pioneer Lil Elt reemerged in 2020 when his early single “Get the Gat” became an internet sensation.
• At 17, Elt struck gold with his 1992 single “Get the Gat.” The locally released single sold more than 30,000 copies.
• In 1993, Elt partnered with DJ Tee to deliver his debut project, Uptown. He released the 1998 album Street Soulja before returning to the underground scene.
• “Get the Gat” made a comeback in 2020, when Louisiana State University’s football team danced to the song in celebration of their championship title, spawning the viral #GetTheGatChallenge.
• Elt rereleased “Get the Gat” in February 2020. The song garnered more than 8.5 million streams and views across platforms and found its way into nearly 30,000 TikTok videos.
• JAY-Z interpolates “Get the Gat” on the hook of Jay Electronica’s 2020 track “Flux Capacitor.”
