Les chats de gouttière - EP
Album - French Pop, Music
Although '60s mod revivalists may seem to primarily exist in London, Spain, and California, the retro quintet French Boutik proves that nobody does moderniste pop as stylishly as Parisians. The French-singing chanteuse Gabriela Giacoman is from San Francisco, and she inflects with a cosmopolitan sophistication right from the opening title track. From the vintage organ warble to the tightly tuned drum kit and some sharply played fuzz-guitar leads, “Les chats de Gouttiere” resonates with period-correct tones. Amid all these retro sounds are clever changes and innovative arrangements that keep French Boutik a step ahead of its contemporaries. The following “La vedette” finds guitarist Serge Hoffman taking the lead vocals, fronting a bouncy and hard-grooving song trimmed in catchy melodies that are equal parts Ray Davies and Jacques Dutronc while maintaining an original edge. Bassist Elián Yvars de Montreuil shines brightest on “Le clope”: a bubbly serving of timeless, analog French-style pop that'd sit perfectly alongside recordings by Stereolab, Broadcast, and Joseph Byrd. “New Bossa” makes good on its title by being an English-sung bossa nova gem.
