Tegan and Sara
The Con
Album · Alternative · 2007 · Vapor/Sire
The Con finds each twin playing to her own distinctive strengths. For Tegan, that's emo-tinged punk songs like the yearning “Nineteen” and the swarming title track, but also sweet, coiled ballads like “Soil, Soil” and “Call It Off.” And for Sara, that's beautifully strange pop-leaning songs: the soft, ceremonial “I Was Married,” the deceptively sweet “Back In Your Head,” and the splintered lament “Like O, Like H.” The record's two sides are united by the twins' unique melodic sensibilities: Dark, and never obvious, but utterly magnetic nonetheless.
