A top-tier jazz bassist, Scott Colley has recorded impressively but infrequently as a leader. Seven marks the welcome premiere of his new project Current, a quartet with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, pianist Kevin Hays, and drummer Nate Smith, marrying the intricate modernism of “Fragment” and “The Return” with the scintillating balladry of “Bridge of Dawn” and “Legacy.” Hays’ vocal on “Don’t Rise” is a radical and inspired detour. These elements all cohere and paint a continually surprising picture.
