To Love and Be Loved
Album - Mainstream Jazz, Music, Jazz
Advancing into his eighties with his fleet technique and improvisational resources in strong form, veteran pianist Harold Mabern is animated on this rewarding set with tenor saxophonist and protégé Eric Alexander, bassist Nat Reeves, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Cobbs’ famous role on Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is acknowledged with “So What,” while Mabern reflects on his storied tenure with Lee Morgan on “The Gigolo,” featuring trumpeter Freddie Hendrix. Cyro Baptista adds percussion on a bouncy reading of an old Sinatra chestnut, the title track.
