There’s an innate intimacy to Kllo’s debut album, as if you’ve been allowed a peek into the innermost thoughts and vulnerabilities of vocalist Chloe Kaul. Embellished by Simon Lam’s masterful production, the Melbourne pair’s long-awaited full-length is deliberate and coolly understated, at once sensual and distant, accessible and immensely personal. While the looped echoes of “Predicament” and the heartbroken, piano-led “Nylon” are the most outwardly emotive, even dance-heavy tracks like “Virtue” and “Dissolve”, all flittering beats and deep bass, are wistful and uncertain. An accomplished debut, Backwater is wise, beautiful and enveloping.
