Mikkel Ploug & Mark Turner
Faroe
Album · Jazz · 2018
Without fanfare, Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug has amassed an impressive discography, including two ensemble albums featuring renowned tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. On Faroe, the follow-up to his solo steel-string acoustic tour de force Alleviation from 2017, Ploug reconnects with Turner in a duo setting. Unveiling compositions he wrote while in the Faroe Islands, Ploug plays steel-string once again but also electric guitar on several tracks, unspooling reflective, otherworldly harmonies and textural beds that provide Turner space for intricate melodic flights. The étude-like beauty and intensity of pieces like “Warmth,” “The Red Album,” and “Ambiguity” make Faroe not only a must-hear guitar album, but also an intimate survey of Turner’s improvisational language.
