Sanctuary Records’ 2007 re-release of Gussie Presenting I Roy provides a wealth of first-rate material from the dawn of Jamaican DJ culture. At a time when many other producers were hesitant to let DJs in the studio, the teenaged Gussie Clarke was boldly cutting entire LPs with them. His productions from this era included this remarkable debut effort from I Roy, whose talent on the microphone ensured that his popularity would soon rival more established contemporaries like Dennis Alcapone and U Roy. This reissue not only includes the 12 tracks on the original release; it also appends 11 stellar tunes that the DJ recorded with Clarke at around the same period, plus an entire second disc that features the original rhythms underpinning I Roy’s memorable DJ cuts. Thus, listeners get to hear not only I Roy’s indignant call for social and racial equality “Blackman Time” but also Lloyd Park’s “Slaving”: a haunting depiction of urban poverty with a stirring instrumental backing that served as the departure point for I Roy’s own version.
