Long Live Rock 'N' Roll
Album · Hard Rock · 1978
Ronnie James Dio’s time with Rainbow came to a close by 1977, but the band’s fusion of sleazy metal dynamics (“Sensitive to Light,” “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll”) with Dio’s keen ear for pop melody would prove hugely influential on ‘80s metal. The sonic extremes of their sound are bookended by the grinding soul-metal of “L.A. Connection” and the portentous guitar arabesques of “Gates of Babylon,” while the gentle “Rainbow Eyes” is a suitably tear-stained Viking funeral for their departing singer.
