Eternally Even
Album · Alternative · 2016 · ATO Records- Jim James
Eternally Even is Jim James’ “What’s Going On” moment. The MMJ frontman conducts a symphony of sounds—like ‘70s patchwork soul, psych, and space-y trip-hop—to speak out against the world’s ills. Songs like “Same Old Lie” and “True Nature” are pointed laments against greed, violence, and inequality tucked inside rhapsodic soul. “Here in Spirit” and “The World’s Smiling Now” simmer with hope, the latter recalling Bill Withers’ warmth and groove. In his own unique and intimate way, Eternally Even nourishes the spirit by engaging the body as well as the brain.
