Listen to Charge by David Ford

Charge
Album · Singer/Songwriter · 2013
This British roots rocker has been out on the road for years, having left the British indie rock group Easyworld in 2004 to pursue his own solo voice. It's for the best, since Ford's music relies on delicate touches that are best controlled when a performer has no obligations to give his bandmates work. A stirring, heartbroken ballad such as "Isn't It Strange?" might not survive in a full-group version. The same goes for the delicate piano ballad "Philadelphia Boy," where the Brit finds a home in America. The nasty blues romp of "Let It Burn" nails down greasy guitars. "Pour a Little Poison" works off a gravity-free rhythm that should be a surefire party favorite. "Moving On" finds space between Ryan Adams and Jackson Browne with its easy accessibility. The piano-based "Throwaway," another heart-tugging ballad, nearly ends the album. But then Ford throws in the surging Irish-influenced rocker "Every Time" to complete things on a fighting note.
