Shining

Album · Pop · 1976 · Sony Music Entertainment
Released and recorded when Marcia Hines was 23, Shining built on the significant success the Boston-born artist had already cultivated. Moving to Australia at the age of 16 to star in the Australian production of Hair, she followed it with a headline role as Mary Magdalene in the touring performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. By 22, she’d proved she could cross over to pop chart success, becoming the first Australian female solo artist to have a platinum-selling album: her 1975 debut full-length, Marcia Shines.

Reuniting with producer Robie Porter for this follow-up, Shining expands on Hines’ gospel roots, incorporating soul, funk, and disco. Boasting covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” and the Burt Bacharach/Hal David composition “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself,” Shining also features tracks written by Rick Springfield (“Love Is the Key”) and Al Sharp (“Whatever Goes Around”).

With three original songs (the title track, “Empty,” “A Love Story”) penned by Porter specifically for Hines—compared with one on her debut—Shining not only captured the singer’s prodigious talent, but provided space for her to emerge as an artist in her own right.
