We speak so often of timelessness that we sometimes forget its true meaning. Timelapse, an album of original works and stunning arrangements, shows how three centuries of music spanning a wealth of genres can engage us in identical emotional ways. Much of the time-bending on display is achieved via inventive reworkings by British violinist David le Page. He laces Schubert’s “Sleep Softly” with a fragile modernity, punctuated by bluesy violin, while also bringing Radiohead and David Bowie into the classical fold with consummate skill and sensitivity. British saxophonist Trish Clowes, meanwhile, deftly unites old and new, building melodic filigree over Vivaldi’s sure harmonic foundations. Performed in their original scorings, Adès’ “O Albion” and Errollyn Wallen’s “Chorale” craft poignancy out of exquisite harmonic twists, while Rameau and Grieg, unadorned, are the very definition of timelessness.
