The Gondwana Orchestra
Colors (feat. Dwight Trible) - EP
Album - Jazz, Music
Colors is a brief but powerful set of Pharoah Sanders compositions, newly arranged by UK trumpeter and Gondwana Orchestra leader Matthew Halsall for the express purpose of featuring Dwight Trible, the great LA-based jazz vocalist and a Sanders associate himself. In essence, it’s a follow-up to Trible’s own Inspirations from 2017, a collaboration with Halsall and the orchestra as well. Although the band is just five pieces, Halsall and friends summon a large sound, appropriate for the epic, spiritual quality of a Sanders classic like “The Creator Has a Master Plan.” Harpist Rachel Gladwin instantly evokes the mesmerizing sound world of Sanders and his ilk from the early post-Coltrane years. Pianist Taz Modi and the others bring a modern rhythmic and harmonic sensibility to the material. Trible clearly feels the songs in his bones and sings them with astounding depth and reverence.
