Listen to Jugendstil by Beatrice Berrut
Beatrice Berrut
Jugendstil
Album - Classical, Music, Piano, Solo Instrumental
On Jugendstil, Swiss pianist Beatrice Berrut focuses on Mahler and Schoenberg, two musical titans of turn-of-the-20th-century Vienna. Here, she gives us her own transcriptions—and in the case of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, a Liszt-style paraphrase—that wonderfully translate the orchestral to the pianistic. The famous “Adagietto” from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 shimmers and sings, while the movements from No. 3 and No. 6 cleverly retain the originals’ mood and scale. The concluding paraphrase of Schoenberg’s sextet is a tour de force, Berrut getting under the skin of this emotionally wrought and deeply moving work.
