ZULO
Talk to Me Naace
Album - Hip-Hop, Music, Hip-Hop/Rap
Nothing short of perfection would do for ZULO on his reintroductory EP, Talk to Me Naace. It took two years and a complete personal rebrand to settle on the finished product of nine tracks that make up a calculatedly stylized tracklist. Spearheaded by the EP’s lead single “Portals,” an anthem that pays homage to the rapper’s home in the south of Johannesburg, ZULO flexes his clever use of sampling, working a slice of Miriam Makeba’s Afropop hit “Cameroon” into the mix. Chronicling universally relatable and topical themes of patience, timing, and self-empowerment into the rest of his EP, ZULO cleverly weaves together old-school kwaito melodies ("JUST VAARBS" and "Love Your Life"), reggae-rooted influences (“Flashlights” featuring Frya & Don Dada), and classic SA hip-hop beats (“8” with Money Badoo) to introduce the Supreme Leader to his congregation.
