Apple O’

Album · Alternative · 2003 · Joyful Noise Recordings

“Heart is dim now/Load up your mind,” sings Satomi Matsuzaki on “Heart Failure,” but Deerhoof’s fifth studio album strikes the perfect balance between soul, brains, and brawn. Guitar riffs splinter like matchsticks and unusual time signatures abound, while a sense of urgency fuels math-rock rave-ups like “My Diamond Star Car,” and “Panda Panda Panda” splits the difference between nursery-rhyme quirk and rhythm ‘n’ blues. Looking for love in the Garden of Eden on “Apple Bomb,” they even try their hand at balladry.
