Yung Bae
Bae 5
Album · Electronic · 2019 · Future of Funk Records, LLC
The name Yung Bae is unmistakably a product of meme culture, but the music that Dallas Cotton makes under that alias is timeless to the core. Armed with a perennially upbeat mood and a sound bank full of classic funk and disco samples, Cotton whips up a glitter-strewn soundtrack to Saturday nights that pairs classic dance sounds—octave-jumping bass, horn fanfare, chicken-scratch guitar—with just the right amount of digital polish. In spirit, Bae 5 isn’t too far from The Avalanches’ Since I Left You or Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, but there’s a saucy joie de vivre that sets it apart—most notably on “Bad Boy,” an infectious disco-rap tune in which bbno$ and Billy Marchiafava stir up trouble beneath the mirror ball. They may front like tough guys, but those string vamps are sweetness personified.
