The Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi incorporates both cinematic and literary aspects into his memorable, atmospheric pieces and has based his projects on works by writers including Virginia Woolf. For In a Time Lapse, Einaudi seeks out American poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau.
The track “Time Lapse” percolates in a primordial electronic fog before a rush of piano, carefully placed electric guitar lines, and sustained strings. “Discovery at Night” carries the melodic style of 1970s piano-based rock, while “Waterways” captures the constant flow of water through a gentle, synthesized bass drum. Violinist Daniel Hope solos on “Life,” “Orbits,” “Experience,” and “Underwood.”
This deluxe version, released in September 2023, includes bonus remixes of eight of the album’s tracks.
